Munawwar Rana Biography, Career, Family, Facts and Cause of Death

Indian Urdu Poet, Munawwar Rana born on the 26th of November 1952, in Raebareli, Uttar Pradesh, India.

He was a Popular poet who wrote in Hindi and Urdu and was well known for his unique voice and style. Rana learned poetry under the mentorship of legendary poets Ali Abbas Khan and Shauq Bahraichi.

Rana was honored with the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2014 for his book “Shahdaba,” a poem written by him. However, he returned the award about a year later due to concerns over rising intolerance in the country.

Early Life and Education

Rana studied poetry under the mentorship of legendary poets “Ali Abbas Khan” and “Shauq Bahraichi”. Rana completed his education in Lucknow, where he earned a master’s degree in Urdu literature.

Career and Achievements

He was Honored with the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2014 for his book “Shahdaba,” a poem written by him. However, he returned the award about a year later due to concerns over rising intolerance in the country. Rana also received multiple awards, including the Ameer Khusro Award, Mir Taqi Mir Award, Ghalib Award, Dr Zakir Hussain Award, and the Saraswati Samaj Award. His works have been translated into several languages. Rana spent much of his life in Kolkata and had a significant presence in mushairas (poetic symposiums) .

Controversies

Munawwar Rana has always gotten into different controversies for his statements. He drew flak for favoring the Taliban and comparing it with Maharishi Valmiki, as well as for supporting the murder of Samuel Paty, who was killed over a controversy about Prophet Mohammad in France.

Personal Life

Munawwar Rana was married to Raina Rana, and they had five children, who’s names are;

  • Tabrez Rana.
  • Sumaiya Rana.

Sumaiya is a member of the Samajwadi Party (SP), led by Akhilesh Yadav.

While his son Tabrez Rana was arrested by Rae Bareli police in August 2021 for allegedly having staged a shootout in relation to a property dispute.

Legacy

Munawwar Rana was a very Popular name in Mushaira circles in India and abroad. His poetry has been translated and published in Hindi, Urdu, Gurumukhi, and Bengali. Rana’s works have left a lasting impact on Urdu literature and poetry.

Cause of Death

Sadly Munawwar Rana passed away on the 14th January, 2024, Due to Cardiac Arrest, He was 71years old.
