Sanath Nishantha Biography, Career, Family, Wiki, Networth and Cause of Death

Sanath Nishantha was a member of the Parliament of Sri Lanka and an active Politician who served as Minister of State for Water Supply. He was sworn in on the 8th of September 2022 until his tragic death in a car accident on 25 January 2024.

Sanath was also a former Minister of State for Fisheries and Inland Fisheries Industry and a Provincial Minister of Fisheries, Highways, and Power in the North Western Province.

He was a very active and loyal member of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP and a close ally to sitting President of Sri Lanka Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena.

Early Life and Education

Nishantha was born on the 3rd of May 1975 in the city of Chillaw located in the North Western Province. His was a fisherman. He had a brother Named Jagath Samantha, who’s also involved and Active in politics.

He attended St. Mary’s Boys College in Chillaw, and Sanath was one of the best and Most Popular student in School and was the best when it comes to sports and extracurricular activities.

Career and Achievements

Sanath Nishantha Started in politics at a very young age, inspired by his father’s involvement in the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP). In 1997 he contested for the local elections in the Arachchikattuwa Divisional Council under the SLFP Party but didn’t win that election.

But his opponent Saman Premachadra won the Election and was was supposed to be elected as the Chairman but unfortunately he got assassinated, following the assassination of the Chairman-elect, Sanath was appointed to the council.

That was how Sanatha came into limelight and became a prominent figure in local politics and a vocal critic of the United National Party (UNP government.

He then contested the Provincial Council election for the North Western Province in 2004 and won that seat with high votes.

Not too long he was appointed as the Provincial Minister of Fisheries, Highways, and Power by the then Chief Minister Athula Wijesinghe.

Sanath was active and held this position until 2015 when he decided to run for the Parliament in the Puttalam District. He was elected to the Parliament with the second-highest number of preferential votes in the district, representing the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA).

He moved to join the newly formed SLPP in 2019, which was led by former of Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa and his brother Gotabaya Rajapaksa. Sanath supported Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s presidential campaign and was appointed as the Minister of State for Fisheries and Inland Fisheries Industry.

He Contested again in 2020 and was re-elected to the Parliament with the highest number of votes in the Puttalam District.

He was well known for his dedication, efficiency, and hard work in his ministry. He was also a vocal defender of the government’s policies and initiatives in the Parliament and the media.

Personal Life

Sanath was married to Chamari Perera, who’s a professional lawyer. They had four children, three daughters and one son. He was a devoted husband and a loving father, who always put  his family over his political career. He was a generous philanthropist, who supported many social and religious causes in his constituency and beyond.

Sanath Nishantha has an Estimated net worth of $5 million. He was a successful politician.

Cause of Death

Sanath died on the 25th January 2024 in a tragic car crash on the Katunayake Expressway.
