He was born on November 27, 1945, in Pughsville, Virginia (current-day Suffolk, Virginia), to James and Florence J. Avery, who was his mother at the time. Despite his father’s denial of paternity, his name did not appear on his birth certificate. James later be relocated to Atlantic City, New Jersey.

He served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War from 1968 to 1969, after which he relocated to San Diego, California, where he began to create poems and television screenplays for the Public Broadcasting System.

During his time there, he was awarded an Emmy for production, and he went on to obtain a scholarship at the University of California, San Diego, where he attended Thurgood Marshall College (formerly Third College), earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in drama and literature in 1976.

Avery’s ashes were burned and dispersed along the Pacific Ocean in the wake of her death. A video conference honoring Avery’s best moments on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air was held in April 2020, and Will Smith joined the cast to celebrate Avery’s contributions to the show.
