Durban – Seven beaches in the eThekwini Municipality have been closed because of e-coli contamination fears.
It has been announced by the city’s spokeswoman, Msawakhe Mayisela, who stated that the beaches have been closed to the public in the interest of public safety.
Unprecedented rainfall and unrelenting vandalism have contributed to an increase in the levels of this bacterium in the uMngeni River, according to a city official who spoke to The Associated Press.
“The city sincerely apologises for the inconvenience this decision is going to cause. It is doing everything in its power to get E-coli levels to acceptable standards.
The public would be informed when the beaches are to be re-opened,” he said.
